In 2018, I won the TPOTY (travel photographer of the year) under 14 category. This was my first photography award. In 2019, I won the same award as well. These are the images in the portfolio that won the 2019 TPOTY under 14 category:

Fishing 🎣 boat 🚣♀️ or rescue vessel?
.
.
In 2018, the state of Kerala in India experienced a devastating flood, the worst flood Kerala has encountered in almost a century. The fishermen in Kerala were the first to rush to rescue, even before the armed forces arrived. They used their fishing boats to rescue numerous helpless civilians. Most importantly, they risked their lives and livelihood for other lives. The humble fishermen of Kerala were the real heroes of the 2018 Kerala flood rescue mission. The period was particularly difficult and emotional for the people of Kerala as many lost their loved ones, their homes and belongings. This picture taken at a Fish auction centre in Kerala features the boats that the fishermen used for rescue as well as their livelihood.

Catch 🎣 of the day! .
.
I was fortunate enough to be there at this fish auction centre while some of the fishermen set out on their trips to the ocean and some others returned with their catch. This was one of the catches from the day - a Sailfish. It was so heavy that two of them had to carry it together. Their faces, especially their eyes reflect their toil and that is something that drew me to this photograph.

Cleaning the nets or the ocean 🌊?
.
.
This picture depicts three fishermen cleaning their nets towards the end of the day. This is a very typical scene along the coastline of Kerala which is mostly inhabited by fishermen. The coastline is their means to life. Men bring fish from the ocean and women take them out to sell it at the markets. One thing that struck me while I was editing this picture is the amount of litter that gets stuck in their nets! The garbage that ends up in the oceans get caught in these nets, which later gets emptied back on the land. Unfortunately it is a vicious cycle. .

Soar away...
.
.
The last picture in the portfolio depicts a contended bird flying away after feeding on the remnants of fish in the boat. If you notice, you will find a rosary with a cross tied to the boat. The names on the boats in the first picture in this portfolio show how devout these fishermen are- most of the boats are named after Christian faith. This particular boat is named after Mary, the mother of Christ (in the local language). I thought this would be an apt photograph to close this portfolio, depicting how these men and their families are grateful to God, at the same time dependent on God. These fishermen were soaring away as they set apart their lives not just for fishing, but to save the lives of thousands of fellow civilians. .
